OzPCTrader - Link Exchange

Links are a great way to get exposure and traffic for a website, especially if the links are from sites that are relevant in content and already have an established authority for your subject in the search engines. One link from a well established site can be worth more than a hundred links from new or irrelevant sites.

Over the years I have learnt that link building is not a trivial exercise and it is very easy to waste your time. Below are the few things I consider when I build links.

Do nots

Link pages like the remnant of my old link page below don't work. There are too many links covering too many different subjects. When sites exchange links they share a bit of each other's authority and ranking in the search engines. If your link is on a page with many other links you have to share the authority you are getting with all the other sites on that page. If a site with content that is irrelevant to your content links to you, your authority increases only for that irrelevant content and not for your own.
Paid links don't work and search engine penalize you if they catch you. Pay per click never worked for me and many search engine optimization experts say they don't. Still, many companies use it.
Automatic link submission systems that do not require approval don't work. Don't install one as soon or later you are going to be inundated with spam.
If you can't find your link on someone's website don't bother. Chance is search engines and visitors might not be able to find it neither.
Unless you have very good reasons not to, stay away from broken or old sites. Your most likely wasting your time. Things to look out for are broken links and scripts, invalid email addresses, outdated copyright notices and news flashs or forum posts that are out of date.

Dos

Exchange links with sites that are relevant to your content only but avoid linking to competitors as this might make you loose business when people click on their link and buy your product from your competitor. As an advertiser of movies I try not to link to websites that sell movies but rather to site that review movies or list movie resources.
Try exchanging links with high ranking, authoritive sites. If you you exchange links with a low ranking site you get a little a bit of a low authority. Good sites to go for are .edu or dot .org sites that have a naturally high ranking because they are the real life authorites in their subjects.
I do, as some people suggest, put up a reciprocal link in advance when I contact someone about a link exchange. Please take the time to politely decline the offer when you get such a request. It is damn annoying if you never hear back and their link stays on your site without a reciprocal link on theirs.
Check your reciprocal links regulalry. Some webmasters only put them up for a short time without telling you and often links drop off naturally.
Establish a links policy and follow it. That way you avoid wasting time and only build relevant links.

How can you exchange links with me

If you have a site with similar content I am happy to exchange links with you. I would prefer if you installed my link on your site before contacing me but you can always just send me an email and we take it from there. If you do decide to place my link first put the name of your site, URL, description and the page where you placed the reciprocal link in the email. You can use any of the code below or make up your own if you prefer. If I agree to the exchange I will place your link on a suitable page with not more than one or two other links. I will get back to you in any case.
